Crazy Appraiser Stories

Here’s your chance to share with your fellow appraisers your crazy stories of your experiences out in the field such as bizarre architecture, interesting interactions with the borrower/agent, and crazy pet stories. As appraisers, we see it all and we all need a good laugh.

To give you some ideas, here are a few stories from the Fall 2017 edition of The Buzz Magazine. To see the whole article, click here.

When I was a trainee, I did a little two-bedroom condo.  A woman met me there but the place was vacant. However, the entire flooring was covered with cat poo. I had to tip toe to avoid getting it on my shoes. No big deal. Sometime later I get an assignment for a house in Santa Clarita. Woman answers the door and looks familiar but I don’t dwell on it. I do my thing. The house is immaculate and modern- maybe 2800 square feet two stories. I finally get to the bonus room right above the garage- door is closed. I open it and remember who she is- the woman who owned the cat condo. The bonus room was the cat sanctuary with flooring to match that condo.

Had a legit hoarder home once where I was grunted at by a transient in the garage sleeping beneath a pile of dog food bags. Of course, I didn’t initially see him because he was buried. Homeowners knew he was out there and never said a word. He came and went as he please through a chipped-out section of the bricks along an exterior wall (blue blanket stuffed in it when not in use). Scared the bejeebies out of me when he grunted!

I had a house where the 1st floor den was connected to the basement via spiral staircase. Wife did not want the appraiser to go down the spiral steps and said she would “show” room from the basement. Telephone rang, appraiser proceeded to the basement, opened the door and the room was full of whips, chains, and other erotica ala “50 Shades of Grey.” I said we would just call it a rec. room and shoot from the best angle to disguise the “toys”.
