Spring 2019 Valuation Expo – Re-cap

Another Valuation Expo is now a closed chapter in the long line of great events.  I’ve been to many, many Valuation Expo events throughout the years and the Valuation Expo Chicago has been one of my absolute favorites.

We kicked off the week with Chicago’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day!  The 2019 theme, “Think Big, Be Bold” took on its own personality!  You can’t get any bigger and any bolder than starting the week off with Irish parades and painting the city green.  The clothing, the scrambled eggs, the deserts, the beer, the coffee, even the river—all turned green in Chicago.  That momentum and enthusiasm carried us into the meetings throughout the week with presenters from the agencies, the GSE’s, and some of the most prominent rating agencies, lenders, AMCs, software providers, and appraisers in the industry.  Take a look at the list of speakers HERE and check out all of the photos from the event HERE.

We began with Collateral Risk Network meeting on Monday, March 18 while McKissock brought a newly revamped version of their best-selling course on HUD’s Single-Family Housing Policy Handbook, Focus on FHA Minimum Property Requirements.  The Lenders and Venders Live session highlighted a litany of the newest products and services from the venders, and the lenders gave us detail into their latest trends and needs.  Participants included Anow, Hubbard Decision Research, Wells Fargo, GeoData Plus, McKissock, AmRock, UBS, Bradford Technologies, Computershare, Sekady Capital, Associated Bank, ValueLink, and Axis.

The evening kicked off the Valuation Expo with our Trade Show Opening Reception.  This gave everyone the chance to mingle and network with exhibitors, appraisers, AMCs, and other valuation professionals with drinks and hors-d’oeuvres.

On Tuesday, March 19, the day started off on a high note with the much-anticipated Keynote address.  New York Times best-selling author, Bethany McLean, interviewed by Gwen Muse-Evans, GME Enterprises provided a wealth of information about the last economic downturn. Bethany explained in detail the similarities and the differences between the political climate in 2008 and the current political climate.

In the morning session, policy Updates from HUD, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac gave us a sneak-peak into the future of housing policy.  The afternoon took us into Valuation Vision session where we gained insights into the trajectory of the industry from unique perspectives of the appraiser, the secondary market, and we examined the valuation process in the US compared to valuation in New Zealand. After this monumental day of Continuing Education, the relaxed evening mood was kicked off in the Trade Show with drinks and refreshments.

The final day, Wednesday, March 20, once again offered an amazing line up for Continuing Education, kicking off with discussions on Collateral Matters from Appraisal Institute, VA, and NAR.   Capping off the morning, Fannie Mae peeled back the layers of their Modernization Initiative giving us a revealing look into the latest buzz on where they are headed.

The afternoon brought an extraordinary treat with a discussion from a diverse panel with varying opinions on Bifurcation, AVMs, and Wavers.  This session took us into an amazing finish with questions, answers, and comments on the subject from the appraisers in the audience and our friends from Fannie and Freddie joined in to provide answers straight from the source.

During the lunch break we took some time to draw the winners from the Appraisal Bee. As always, our vendors went above and beyond with some fabulous prizes. Here is a list of prizes that our sponsors donated and the lucky winners.
